Christine Lagarde, by Emma Mezzana

Did you know that some of the most important institutions in Europe are actually in the hands of remarkable women?

It is the case of the European Central Bank (ECB), led by Christine Lagarde, a French business lawyer and politician that paved the way for many other women in her field. After being part of Baker McKenzie, one of the most well-known international law firms in the world, she decided to go for bigger. That is why, in 2008, she was named for the first time in a G8 state, french Minister of Economy. She got chosen specifically to handle the tough aftermaths of the subprime crisis. Needless to say, she did not stop there and became the first woman to preside over the International Money Fund (IMF).

Determination has led her to amazing opportunities. Obviously, it does not explain everything: she comes from a wealthy family of qualified teachers, which surely has contributed to her success. However, what made her stand out among others is certainly her boldness. In fact, when she applied to the IMF and the ECB, she knew she did not have all of the required qualifications; but it did not stop her, and guess what? She got both positions.

“If it had been Lehman Sisters rather than Lehman Brothers, the world might well look a lot different today.”

Furthermore, her rigorous, yet witty personality never misses to inspire, especially when she uses it to enlighten some taboo subjects, such as the #MeToo movement or the shaming of working mothers. By now, she has proved several times that a woman can break the glass ceiling above her. Will it soon be your turn?
