Amal Alamuddin Clooney, by Oriella Trad

While most people know her as George Clooney’s wife or for her glamorous red carpet looks, the Lebanese-British lawyer has had a long standing career in humanitarian work, being one of the highest profile human rights attorneys and activists over the past few years.

Born in Beirut (Lebanon), Amal fled the country, during the Lebanese civil war in 1982, and settled in London. After graduating from Oxford University with a Bachelor of Laws degree, she studied for her Master of Laws at the New York University.

Amal’s impressive career is making a significant mark on the world. In fact, she has been representing prominent figures and governments such as Julian Assange, former president of Ukraine, the country of Armenia for the recognition of genocide, and the greek government in its long running bid to have a collection of greek sculptures returned from the British museum. Moreover, Amal has been supporting more vulnerable clients like the Yaizidis who endured ISIS brutalities in Iraq.

In addition to her work in the field of law, she is the Co-Founder and President of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, that advocates for justice through accountability for human rights abuses around the world.

As her own name in Arabic means “hope”, Amal herself has been standing a beacon of light and inspiration for her peers in the homeland, speaking up about her country of origin and donating lots of money to the Lebanese community.

Last but not least, Amal seems to be a real life superhero by embodying womanhood in such an inspiring way: she’s a feminist, style icon, mother of two wonderful twins, and a woman whose work is never overshadowed by her famous husband. She’s been the perfect role model for young girls, showing that winning the beauty genetic lottery isn’t the only way to succeed in life.
