With a total of 26.02 % in the elections, on the 25th of September 2022, Italy decided to take an important step. Italians agreed that the time had come for a female PM.
Giorgia Meloni is the first woman in the history of Italy to take the reins of the government. A politician since her adolescence, she was already interested in politics and took part in youth debates and organizations.
Born in 1977 to a working-class family in Garbatella, located in the southern zone of Rome, she was raised by her mother. Her passion for politics, as previously said, bloomed in her early years. She was highly involved in Italian politics at a time when politics was mostly male.
In 1998, she was elected as a councilor of the province of Rome and in 2006 to the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the National Alliance. At 31 years old, Meloni was appointed Minister of Youth. A more significant shift in her political career, happened in 2012 when she founded the party “Brothers of Italy”, and became its president in 2014.
In a country in which women are still covering marginal roles in society and politics, Giorgia Meloni’s election represents an important signal. Her election as PM shows the world of Italian politics that women can lead and that women can do politics. Feminist or not, Meloni is a turning point in Italian history: from now on young girls can finally see themselves as future leaders.
Even though her appointment as PM has been an object of many discussions, Giorgia Meloni is without any doubt a strong and capable woman.
